RE Festival Workshop- Lailat-Ul-Bara'ah

Image
Today we looked at the Muslim festival of Lailat-Ul-Bara'ah. This February festival is known as the night of forgiveness as it is thought to be the one night of the year Allah comes closer to earth to judge his people for the year ahead. Many Muslims will seek forgiveness for any sins they may have and will often spend  the night is often spent in prayer, asking for forgiveness and Allah's guidance.  We thought about times in our own life where we may have made a mistake or done something that we regret and then we considered how we could make amends for this. Our activity involved drawing our 'sin' on paper and then flying the mistake into the past by turning it into a paper plane.

This week in PE Year 4 have been looking at the capabilities of their bodies and just how strong they can be. Also they have been cracking on with their basketball topic, focussing on the art of dribbling on the move. We incorporated lots of different pieces of equipment to allow the children to use the various muscle groups. They had to step, squat, jump, hang and swing. Take a look!

This week in English we have been looking at the book ‘Flanimals’ by Ricky Gervais. We have compared the text to our first book, ‘We Travel So Far’, as both books are about amazing creatures! In addition to learning about the different Flanimals, we have also learnt how to use fronted adverbials and possessive apostrophes to improve our animal descriptions. We finished the week by creating our own fantastical Flanimals and painting these with watercolours ready to use as part of our creative writing next week!

PSHE: Staying Safe

Image
Today we were visited by Poppy and Lisa, who are PSCOs who came in to speak to us about staying safe and discrimination. We talked about how everyone is different but we are all the same and so we should treat everyone with respect. This links with our theme of ‘No Outsiders’. The children listened brilliantly and were very respectful throughout.

Ancient Egyptian Workshop

Today, Year 4 were treating to a fantastic hands-on Egyptian workshop by Estelle from the IOW Heritage Service. Estelle told us all about a Victorian collector called Sir Henry Seton-Karr and showed us some of his amazing collection of Egyptian artefacts. We learned all about mummification and even took part in a mummification ceremony, where we explored some of the artefacts in more detail. We then got to look at the artefacts up close, even getting to hold them in our hands. It was amazing to think that some of the things we were holding were over 3000 years old!
